Best Websites to Make Money Online

You don't always have to spend money to make money. If you want to launch a side gig to generate regular part-time income, or if you're looking for some quick extra cash, there are

websites that can help you do it.

Consider these top resources to make money online:

Depending on whether you're looking to earn extra money quickly or build a long-term income stream, each of the following websites offers unique advantages (and sometimes disadvantages) tailored to different needs and interests. Read on for more information on each site.

Upwork

How it works: Upwork is essentially a meeting site where businesses and freelancers throughout the world can connect and collaborate on certain projects. Businesses hire freelancers for a variety of different services, including writing, web design, running SEO campaigns and pretty much any work that can be done on a computer.

Highlights: Upwork takes a commission from 5% to 20%, but the more money you make, the less the commission is.

Drawbacks: Upwork has been so successful that there is a lot of competition on the website, and that can be a real drawback for people who are new to the site, says Sacha Darosa, owner of a digital marketing agency in Toronto called The Shirtless Web Guy.

"Before I started my business in web design, I created profiles on websites such as Upwork. In the beginning it was a struggle to attract any attention from buyers on those platforms because there's so much competition. And much of the competition was from overseas, which made it impossible for me to compete with others on price."

So Darosa lowered his prices and for a while, he was working for next to nothing. But the positive feedback made his profile look better, and Darosa started charging more.

"Although platforms like Upwork can be helpful in building a portfolio and initial client base, I am glad to be off them and on my own," Darosa says.

Fiverr

How it works: This is also a popular website that can be helpful for freelancers. Know something about digital animation? You can work for someone who doesn't have these skills and pick up some extra cash. Even better, you can offer to compile web research for someone for fast cash.

Highlights: You can make good money from the site, asserts Dan Bochichio, a web designer and digital strategist in Albany, New York, who runs a two-person company called Bocain Designs. He says that his firm makes $3,000 to $5,000 a month from Fiverr. "To stay ahead of the competition, I make sure my Fiverr profile and gig descriptions are well written and communicate the value of the services I'm offering. When someone reaches out to me, I make sure to reply as quickly as I can and follow up with to inquiry by asking good questions. A quick, but carefully written reply will increase the odds of them hiring you drastically," Bochichio says.

Drawbacks: Bochichio's success aside, Fiverr's name comes from the fact that many people used to work for $5 a task. You can ask for more (and arguably should), but a lot of your prospective clients are probably expecting you to work for next to nothing.

Etsy

How it works: If you're artistic and are the type of person who can make custom jewelry or refrigerator magnets, Etsy is the place to sell your products.

Highlights: It's easy to navigate the site and set up a shop.

Drawbacks: There's a lot of competition on the website. On one hand, the branding is big, and a lot of people know about Etsy. But once you put up your wares, as with Upwork and Fiverr, you are one in a gazillion people selling stuff on Etsy. It may feel a little overwhelming.

TaskRabbit

How it works: Are you willing to get your hands dirty? People come to this site to find those willing to do various tasks, such as putting together a bookcase, cleaning a garage or running an errand. Do as many tasks as you want, and this could become quite the part-time (or full-time) job.

Highlights: You can apply for tasks, but you can also put up a profile, explaining what tasks you're available for and skilled at, and people may end up seeking you out for work.

Drawbacks: A lot of the tasks you'll find on TaskRabbit are, as noted, physical – like setting up furniture. Of course, if that's your jam, that's a plus.

Wonder

How it works: People come to this site when they need research done. Wonder doesn't hire just anyone, but you can apply. The process takes about five minutes, according to the website. And if Wonder thinks you have the skills to do research, you'll get access to its dashboard. You can then choose to answer a question – perhaps coming from a business executive or an author writing a book.

Highlights: Researchers report making, on average, $8 to $16 for each detailed answer, and job sites suggest researchers can make, on average, about $20 an hour. In short, Wonder offers an ideal gig for those who really enjoy the process of doing research, as opposed to those who just want to make fast money.

How to Start an Online Store in 9 Simple Steps

The first time I considered how to start an online store, I remember staring at the blank canvas before me, not knowing where to begin.

Looking back, the mistakes I made are not uncommon for first-timers. That’s why I wanted to create the best guide for how to make a website to sell your products.

💡 TIP: If you get stuck while building your own Shopify store, you can skip ahead and revisit a section later, look for answers in our Help Center, ask the Shopify Community, follow our Getting Started with Shopify coursehire a Shopify store setup expert, or reach out to our award-winning 24/7 support team.

It’s OK to figure things out as you go, and Shopify offers many resources to help. You can also buy a Shopify store through Exchange if you don't want to start from scratch.

How to start an online store in 9 steps

1. Choose an ecommerce platform

An ecommerce platform lets you build and create an online experience, make sales, and fulfill orders. Most people think an ecommerce platform is like a website builder: you simply list new products and accept payments online. But they can do so much more than that.

Your ecommerce platform acts as the control center for your entire business, controlling everything from inventory to marketing, giving you all the tools you need to sell online and provide customer support.

Key features to look for in an ecommerce platform include:

Usability. Your ecommerce software should be easy to use, especially if you are DIYing it in the beginning. Look for a tool that is intuitive and uses a drag and drop online store builder to easily create your online store. Schedule a demo or free trial if you want to find out for yourself.
Accessible customer support. Look for a platform that offers support the entire way. For example, with Shopify, you can get help launching your site or migrating it from another software, as well as ongoing support. Support teams are available 24/7 through live chat, email, or even phone, anytime you need, in 19 different languages.
Friction-free checkout. Streamlined checkout is critical to making sales. Find an ecommerce platform that makes it easy for shoppers to buy your products. If you use Shopify, Shop Pay streamlines online checkout, increasing checkout speed by four times. You can also use Shopify’s plug-ins, with more than 100 payment gateways to accommodate various payment methods and currencies.
Web hosting. A web host stores information and content on your ecommerce website in a server database. You need web hosting to let people access your online store. Some ecommerce software offers web hosting built-in, while others require you to use a third-party solution.

When choosing your ecommerce software, consider your current and future needs. Some platforms may be the best solution for today, but a powerful platform like Shopify can get you started quickly and support your future growth.

Start a free trial of Shopify and build your ecommerce store through one of our professionally designed templates. The 14-day trial should give you enough time to start an online store that’s ready to launch if you follow this guide and keep in mind that you can continue to add products and improve your store after it goes live.

2. Decide on a target audience

A target audience is the group of people your marketing efforts are focused on. When starting an ecommerce business, knowing your ideal audience is critical. It helps you find new customers easier and attract interested buyers to your website, resulting in higher conversion rates and more sales.

You can make an audience of any size or attribute, depending on what products you plan to sell. However, there are three main categories to look at as a new ecommerce entrepreneur:

Demographics. Includes characteristics such as age, gender, occupation, education, and income.
Location. Groups that divide the market based on geographic location, so you can serve a specific area better.
Interests. Built around psychographics and includes attitudes, personality, opinions, and the lifestyle of your audience.

If you have a product already, choosing a target audience is easier. Ask yourself: Who buys my product? What are they like? What’s their age? Compile that information into a buyer persona and include it in your business plan. You’ll want it when you create your website copy and marketing campaigns.

If you don’t have a product just yet, think about the types of people you know best. For example, maybe you love pets and understand other pet owners in their 40s and 50s really well. Chances are, you have a good idea of what they like and dislike, their needs and fears. That could be your target audience.

To sell online, you need to genuinely know and appreciate your audience. For more help on determining it, read Finding Your Ideal Customer: How to Define and Reach Your Target Audience.

3. Choose your products

One of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs face is finding profitable products to sell. Coming up with product ideas is a bit tricky, but if you have a target audience in mind, you’re one step ahead. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to find products to sell, whether you’re manufacturing, reselling, or dropshipping.

You can find profitable products to sell in a number of ways:

Appeal to enthusiastic hobbyists
Go with your personal passion
Capitalize on trends early
Look at what’s trending in online marketplaces

4. Design your site

Before we begin, you’ll need to start a free trial of Shopify. If you follow this guide, the 14-day trial should give you more than enough time to create an online store that’s ready to launch. Keep in mind that you can continue to add products and improve your store after it goes live.

When you start your trial, you’ll be prompted to enter a store name, which will become your default URL (e.g., storename.myshopify.com). You won’t be able to change this, but you will be able to buy a custom domain (e.g., yourstore.com) later on, so don’t worry about picking the perfect name right now.

After answering a few questions, you’ll find yourself inside your own Shopify account.

Shopify dashboard

Here’s a quick checklist of what you should have before you begin and what I’ll be working with to start my store:

A business idea. Since so many hot sauce brands brag about being “the hottest hot sauce ever,” I thought it would be fun to create an example store called Kinda Hot Sauce that sells great-tasting mild hot sauces for the semi-adventurous. If you don’t have a business idea yet, you can browse our list of business ideas for inspiration.
A business name. I used Namechk to check if my business name ideas were available on social and as a domain before settling on it. Since some .com URLs are hard to come by, I went with kindahotsauce.shop as the domain. Don’t know what to call your store? Learn how to choose a domain name or try Shopify's free domain name generator.
A logo. I worked with a designer to come up with this logo for a “challenger brand” that’s clever, mischievous, bold, and spicy (tongue in cheek for a mild hot sauce company). I prepared a .png file with a transparent background so it’s easier to resize it without losing quality. You can follow our guide to create your own logo for free or by hiring a designer.
Photos. Clean product photography helps you put your best foot forward. I’ll be using mockups of my hot sauce bottles on a white background, along with some stock photos for lifestyle imagery. If you’re on a budget, you can shoot your own product photos, even with just a smartphone camera, or use free stock photos until you can shoot your own custom lifestyle photos.

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This may influence which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money.

For those looking to make money in an easily accessible way, apps provide plenty of avenues to consider. You can use your smartphone to take surveys, pick up a side gig, sell your unwanted stuff and more.

Here’s the scoop on seven free money-making apps. NerdWallet considered apps with at least four stars and 25,000 reviews in both Google Play and the iOS App Store.

The best money-making apps

1. Ibotta

How it works: Ibotta lets you earn cash back on in-store and online purchases at over 2,000 supported retailers. Originally for groceries, it has expanded to include clothing, entertainment and eating out, pet supplies and other categories. Offers can be product or retailer-specific — and some will automatically be applied. For others, you’ll need to complete an additional task such as watching a video or taking a poll.

There are three possible ways to earn cash back in stores: Add offers and submit your receipt in the app after your shopping trip, link your retailer loyalty accounts or purchase a retailer gift card through the Ibotta app. For online purchases, you shop through the app or with the Ibotta browser extension on your computer.

Payment: PayPal, digital gift card or direct to a bank account.

Pros: You’ll receive cash back on in-store purchases quickly — typically within 24 hours. Ibotta also offers a welcome bonus to new users, referral bonuses and a variety of payment methods.

Cons: Making money can be a slow process. You must have at least $20 in cash back to redeem your earnings (some gift cards require at least $25 in earnings). For online shopping, the pending period for earning cash back varies by retailer.

Download: Android, iOS.

2. Rakuten

How it works: Rakuten (formerly known as Ebates) rewards shoppers with up to 40% cash back on purchases from well-known retailers, restaurants and food delivery services. Users can also earn cash back on travel, gift cards and more. It’s straightforward: Create an account, tap on the store where you want to shop in the app, then make the transaction through the portal. You can also link a credit or debit card to your Rakuten account to earn cash back in-store — as long as you activate the deal through the app first. Rakuten credits the cash back to your account after it confirms the purchase with the retailer, which it says can take a few hours to several days.

Payment: PayPal or check.

Pros: Thousands of stores and purchases are eligible for cash back, so you’ll likely find deals where you already shop. New users can earn a $10 welcome bonus after their first qualified purchase. You can also earn sign-up and referral bonuses.

Cons: As with most cash-back services, you have to spend money to make money. You won’t see your earnings right away, either; Rakuten sends out payments every three months, and you need at least a $5 cash-back balance to get paid.
